What is the REAL Witching Hour?

by Bill Knell

I can't tell you how many times people have asked me about the “Witching Hour”. Most assumed it was between 12am-1am. That's logical enough because it is the time when one day ends and another begins on many time keeping devices and systems. However, we are not talking about conventional or linear time. Those subjects don't actually fit into the equation.

12am-1am became the popular choice because people who lived in the days before electricity and nighttime live or electronic entertainment tended to wake up confused  between those hours because they had an untreated sleep disorder. If your REM sleep cycle was interrupted you might have trouble falling back to sleep. Edgar Allen Poe immortalised that time of night at the beginning of his poem ‘The Raven’. “Once upon a MIDNIGHT dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary…”

The real witching hour is likely 3am. Why? Because Christian tradition and Jewish time keeping says that Jesus died on the cross around 3pm on Friday. During that time the huge temple curtain was torn and an earthquake occurred causing graves to be opened. Dead saints came out of those graves on Sunday when Christ was risen and walked around Jerusalem being seen by many. Not wanting to be outdone, the devil likely chose 3am to be considered the start of all things evil. A time when the physical and spiritual worlds are less separated allowing demons and powers of darkness to wander more freely just as saints had done. It wasn't uncommon to hear Gossips saying “Decent people are asleep at those hours.”

People who claim to hear “ghostly” or “unexplained” knocking noises usually hear three knocks in a row around 3am. Some exorcists and religious leaders say that is another way the devil mocks God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). The subject of Ghosts is one that still remains unexplained and more complicated than ever. Most of the generalisations include:

-Disembodied spirits

-Demons

-interdimensional beings

-Living spirits

-Replay of past or future images

-Misunderstood alternative unexplained phenomenon

Can everyone see ghosts? Probably not. Should you try to see or contact them? Definitely not. Even if I use my own paranormal investigations as a way to answer those questions I have to point out that seeking after potentially negative and even dangerous entities can lead to nothing good. Most people who contact paranormal investigators feel like they have tried everything else and want to speak with someone who will take them seriously and try to help.
