An Orange Tree

Florida has all sorts of unsolved mysteries and creepy folklaw, but the SATAN Tree has got to be right up there with the Bermuda Triangle. Why? Because you can't exactly find it, kill it or solve the pernicious perennial plant's mystery! I was born in New York City and lived there until I became a teenager. We had lots of strange places and unexplained phenomena, however, as soon as I moved to St Petersburg, Florida, I found a whole new kind of weirdness. They had UFOs, ghosts and more just like us, but it seemed that they also had a bunch of cool folklore like the Skunk Ape (Bigfoot), the Fountain of Youth, haunted Theme Park rides, the 1951 Mary Reeser spontaneous combustion case, and the Satan Tree and I wanted to know all about those.

The Satan Tree is allegedly surrounded by some other trees of the same type with dead limbs making it difficult to spot. Some point it to being an old orange tree in Florida, or a maple tree elsewhere. It's one of many EVIL TREE stories found worldwide. Just like the others, this one is somehow connected to devil or occult worship groups who allegedly perform bizarre rituals near or around it. Local legends attempt to tie them to real crimes, while others suggest these trees are cursed by those who disrespect them by urinating on them or using dead branches for firewood. One interesting legend from Colorado says that Bigfoot Creatures were created by a Watcher who did so after he saw people tearing down trees and ripping off branches.

While living in Florida I met five people who claimed to have found the Satan Tree. None could recall exactly where it was and none wanted to find it again. Three of the people were 18-19 year old girls who touched what looked like uncolored sap and were severely burned. Two were 19 year old boys (separate from the first group) who also got burned. Six others I met later (25-31 year olds) said they felt cursed because they lost jobs or got divorced. I never found the tree and never wanted to. Some things need to be left alone. However, the two 19 year old boys tried to burn the tree down. They had a gas can in their pickup. No matter what they did, it would not light.
