The Toy-Box Attacker: America's Most Sadistic Serial Rapist and Murderer

by Bill Knell

It began with a cassette tape recorded in 1993. Victims were forced to listen to the frightening monotone voice of David Parker Ray (1939-2002) describing what would happen to them. They were teased with hope that they might survive if they submitted to him and kept quiet. Described as a man who was an American psychopathic, sociopathic, sexual sadist, kidnapper and serial killer, Ray created a $100,000 soundproof torture chamber in a re-purposed cargo trailer that he called his Toy-Box. His trailer and home were located in Elephant Butte, New Mexico.

Everything inside his trailer was designed to inflict horrible pain. None of the items or potions had anything to do with pleasure. All his victims were females who were runaways, drug addicts and lone wolf prostitutes who wouldn't be missed by anyone if they disappeared. Some victims were first brought into his house to be dosed, but the ones already near unconsciousness were brought into his trailer where they were seated and restrained in a gynecological chair. Ray craved sadistic rape and torture more than anything else.

Authorities say that his crimes spanned over forty years (1957-1999) and involved a minimum of fifty-five women, and a possible maximum of ninety or more. Unlike some other serial attackers, he was careful and methodical. David was a Master Mechanic for the New Mexico State Parks Department. Considered reliable and talented, Ray once won an “Employee of the Year” award in 1995. He was thought of as a regular guy by his friends and co-workers, but he was also a master manipulator that could convince people to do almost anything.

A woman named Cynthia managed to escape his toy-box trailer, along with two other victims, and all revealed that Ray had accomplices. One was his daughter Glenda Jean Ray. Another was a live-in girlfriend named Cindy Hendy and a few friends.

As soon as David was arrested with the others, Ray claimed that he was helping his victims get clean from drugs and any sex they had was consensual. FBI agents and police officers did not believe him and began trying to connect him to missing women cases. Ultimately, they were able to prove that Ray was in the vicinity of 90-95 girls when they went missing.

Ray either hid the corpses of his victims in the vast New Mexico landscape or dumped them into a large reservoir lake near his house. The lake is forty two miles long. Even with a ‘Treasure Map’ drawn by Ray to keep track of the corpses, none were ever found. Given his ability to mislead, it's possible the map was a fake designed to confuse searchers.

Authorities say he would kidnap at least five women a year and hold each for 2-3 months. During that time Ray would rape and sexually torture them with surgical instruments. David also invited his girlfriend, other male friends and his male dog to join in and took pleasure from watching them all rape and abuse the girls. After keeping them in captivity, Ray would drug some of his victims who he didn't want to kill with barbiturates in an attempt to erase their memories before abandoning them by the side of a road.

Ray was finally arrested in March of 1999 after one of his victims named Cynthia escaped and made it to a hospital. David was convicted of kidnapping and torture in 2001. He received a lengthy sentence, but was never tried for murder due to a lack of evidence. He died of a heart attack in prison on May 28, 2002.
