Time Slips I Cannot Explain
Time Slips I Cannot Explain by Bill Knell
There are many tales of ‘Time Slips’ online and in books. For those new to the topic, these are instances (usually brief and rarely explainable using conventional wisdom) of a person or group of people suddenly finding themselves in a different historical period before returning to their original time. While I believe some are real and totally legitimate, others appear to be clever fakes or just bad attempts to get noticed. Here, in my opinion, is an example of a bad attempt using photographic image manipulation:
Rather than show or tell you about Time Slips that have been covered dozens of times online, I will use this article to take you on a tour of instances I have personally discovered and investigated. I have talked about these in my UFO and Paranormal seminars and covered a couple in my video documentaries.
Let's begin our tour in El Paso, a border city in west Texas. I have been there many times to present lecture programs and always enjoyed the friendliness and hospitality of the place. After a seminar in 1996, I stayed around to speak with some of the many attendees. This gave people a chance to ask questions and tell me about unexplained experiences they may have had. It was there that I met Dean and his family.
Dean lived in El Paso all his life. He became interested in unexplained and paranormal topics after his own experience in 1989. It occurred at Hueco Tanks State Park near El Paso, a place with naturally occurring basins that collect rainwater. Overall, it is a huge accumulation of granite. Humans have lived in and around it for thousands of years. It's a rugged place to visit that's well known for bouldering and rock art.
Relatives visiting him from out of town for the first time were anxious to visit Hueco Tanks. Dean, who had been there several times over the years, took them to the site. He described a rugged “walk up” which led to an elevated area where views of several tanks, some rock art and old graffiti can be seen. I knew that location because I visited it myself while in town, spraining my ankle in the process.
In the late 1800s it was kind of a rite of passage for young people, especially young ladies, to use the “walk up” trail to get to a large cleft in, and partially covered by, rocks where they would leave graffiti proving they had made the climb.
As Dean and his party of three got close to the rock cleft, they suddenly felt a change in the temperature which went from chilly to very warm. At the same time they noticed three young ladies in dresses that would have been in style sometime in the late 1800s.
Example of the types of clothing they saw
Dean told me that, unlike ghostly figures which are often portrayed as transparent, translucent or floating partial bodies, these ladies looked completely solid and real. As they walked closer, a fourth young lady could be seen in the rock cleft trying to leave graffiti. Dean and his small group heard the other three young ladies talking to each other. Dean told me that it wasn't really clear to him what they were saying, but one of his relatives thought she heard one of the girls talking about her boyfriend. Some things never change!
The ladies either didn’t see them, or purposely ignored Dean and his relatives. What happened next was the craziest thing of all. After about five minutes the fourth young lady rejoined the others. Then, they all turned in the direction of Dean's group. Dean and his relatives moved to the side as the young ladies walked right past them (so close they could smell perfume), still showing no signs of recognition. Just as the young ladies reached the trail to go back down, they were gone and Dean's group felt the temperature of the air suddenly turn cool.
I had to leave El Paso to remain on schedule for my next seminar. While on my tour I spoke with Dean again by phone, and with the relatives that accompanied him during the unexplained event. I was confident that all were telling the truth, especially after they wanted to remain anonymous. There was nothing in it for them to lie. It was pretty much impossible to identify the young women they saw that day. However, my research turned up some interesting facts.
The area was inhabited for centuries by the Tiqua people who actually lived there. The remains of small houses and burial sites have been found. The area was originally named by the Spanish Conquistadors. Hueco is the Spanish word for hollow which well describes the many hollowed out rock tanks.
The Tiqua people consider Hueco Tanks to be a “sacred ancestral site” and have many stories about it. For centuries tribal members claimed that they were able to occasionally see abuelos whom they considered to be long dead “grandfathers” or tribal “sin cleaners” in certain areas of the rocks.
Prayers were said and ceremonies carried out there by the Tiqua. They believed that the place allowed them to connect with the world of spirits. Some of the rock art is actually their visual representation of prayers for rain. There are over 3000 pictographs in the park.
Several modern day visitors have said that while exploring isolated side canyons they felt a distinct change in temperature and environment. For some that was accompanied by a feeling of serenity. Others felt fear as if something bad occurred there or was about to happen.
Next up I will take you to Prince Edward Island in Canada for another Time Slip that I investigated. This one took place in 1985. Prince Edward Island is located off of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In 1991 I received a phone call from a man I will call Jack. Anonymity was required because he was a university professor in Ontario, Canada, who didn't want to have to retell his story to every faculty member and student that might ask about it. He is retired and still asks for anonymity.
I have been to Canada numerous times and presented many seminars there. I've even been fortunate enough to speak with people involved with several famous UFO and paranormal cases, including the famous CARP video of a UFO landing in August of 1991. I was able to show people the video during my seminar in Toronto, Ontario, early that fall.
The primary witness was Diane Lubernek of West Carlton, Ontario. She said,
“I looked out the window and I saw flames out on the field, extremely red flames and lots of smoke. It didn’t look like a fire. I know what a fire looks like when you start a fire out there when the grass is very dry. If you start a fire, you will see it moving either this way, or closer to the woods. And the fire was on one spot only. I saw a ship coming down close to the flames. Right on top of the ship, I saw a blue flashing light and another light was on the bottom, very bright. I didn’t know what to do. I was looking at it for about 10 minutes or so. And then the ship went a little bit back over the trees and it disappeared and I saw all the flames turn out at the same time. I don’t think I’d like to see it again. It’s very scary. I’ve lived here for many, many years and I have never been so scared in my life.”
Although I have never visited Prince Edward Island, I have a decent background knowledge of unexplained events that occurred there (including the 2014 Kensington UFO event).
During August of 1985 Jack was visiting Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, on personal business. It's a small community where nothing out of the ordinary normally happens. That wasn't the case during Jack's week-long stay in a hotel there. He woke up from a good night's sleep on a Tuesday morning. After calling his wife to check in, he prepared to meet the day. Jack got into his car and drove to a planned meeting nearby. Sometime during a break he went to use the restroom in a hallway. When he came out, something was wrong.
He was still in the same building, but things looked and felt different. He didn't recognize any of the people around him and the door to the meeting room was locked. He went to ask the receptionist what was going on? It was a different receptionist than the first one he originally saw when he came into the building. This one looked like she was wearing a retro outfit from the 1970s and had an old style haircut to match. She paid no attention to him, but he became very disturbed when he noticed that her desk calendar had the year 1978 printed on it.
Jack went outside to look around. Everything appeared normal. When he turned around to look back at the building, the original receptionist was back. He walked in, returned to the meeting and tried to put the strange event out of his mind until the meeting ended. When it did he reluctantly used the restroom in the hallway again, but this time nothing out of the ordinary occurred.
Jack tried not to think about what happened. His greatest fear was not that something paranormal occurred. It was that maybe one of his students, or someone else at his school, had dropped LSD into the coffee he always left on his desk when he was out of the room. Then, it happened again.
After a long day on Wednesday, Jack drove to a seaside area in the evening to relax, drink a safe cup of coffee and organize his thoughts for the following day. He was so deep in thought that he fell asleep. When he woke up he was no longer in the car. He was stretched out on a rough and grassy area by the sea. There was no car, no parking lot, no paved road and just a few old style looking houses off in the distance. Now he was certain that he was either dreaming, or had been dosed. He looked at his watch and realised that he had only slept for twenty minutes.
Left with no options, he began walking towards the houses. He felt the warm temperature, smelled the salty air and was amazed at the reality of his unreal situation. He was just grateful that he still had his clothes on and they were from the right era. As he came close to a house, he saw a man with a horse cart coming up a dirt trail. He looked like he belonged in the 1800s. Jack tried getting his attention, but the man ignored him and continued on his way.
When he finally arrived at the first house, Jack saw that the curtains were closed. Hearing noises inside he rapped on the door. He later told me that his knocks were barely audible. No one answered. He sat down on an old wooden bench in front of the house to think about what to do next. He felt annoyed that his good shoes were covered with mud that smelled like horse or cow manure. Despite that, he was remarkably calm considering his dilemma. Jack leaned his head back on the outside of the house. He felt very tired and fell asleep.
Jack woke up back in his car. His watch revealed that he was missing less than a half hour. Now he was certain that he had been dosed. Then, he noticed a foul odor. He looked down at his shoes and they were covered with smelly mud. There was no area near his car that would or could have caused that. The rest of his week was normal.
My last story comes from Manhattan, New York City.
I presented my UFO COVER-UP seminar at Fordham University in the Bronx, NYC, in 1994. I was honored to be invited to speak by the school's Student Activities Director. It's a very prestigious school and my seminar was packed full of students and teachers. It was a wonderful experience and, as always, I left plenty of time at the end for questions. I also stayed around for a while because many in the audience wanted to share their experiences with me.
One twenty year old boy handed me a note that said, “You'll want to talk with me.” It included his phone number. Jacob was a student at Fordham. I always follow up on case tips, so I got back to him about a week later. I was living in New York City at the time. After speaking on the phone with Jacob, we decided to meet at a restaurant near the school. He was very nice and our conversation was pleasant from the start.
When he wasn't in school he lived in Manhattan with his parents and younger sister in a townhouse. After he graduated high school in 1991, Jacob had the summer off. He isn't an outdoorsy kind of guy. He preferred to hang out with his girlfriend or buddies in the city, see a good movie, visit a museum, go to a concert or read a good book. He likes to read and often did so at a small park near his townhouse when the weather was good.
He was at that park on a summer afternoon in 1991 when “the weirdest thing happened to me… I've never been able to explain it.” That weird thing occurred shortly after he finished reading a chapter in his book and decided to take a snack break. His townhouse was just a city block away, so he decided to go there, call his girl and fix himself a healthy snack.
Jacob walked the block, turned the corner towards his house and froze. He suddenly found himself staring at an elevated train that had been taken down decades ago. He saw people walking around in clothes that looked like the ones worn in the old gangster movies his dad liked to watch. There were old cars, bumper to bumper on the street. Jacob choked from the smell of auto exhaust in the air. The neighborhood looked congested and dirty.
Like most people who experience Time Slips, he was completely unprepared for it. Jacob began to think he was having some sort of a stroke or brain issue that was causing him to see and experience hallucinations. He wanted to get home, but his building wasn't there. He looked down at his clothes. They were still the same. A tee shirt, jeans and sneakers. Then things got worse.
Unlike the other two instances, the out of time people began looking at him. Some rough kids called him a freak and threw pennies at him saying he should buy some decent clothes. He ran into a small restaurant and locked himself in the men's room. The owner knocked hard on the door yelling that he had better come out. He did.
Jacob bolted out of the restroom onto the crowded sidewalk and immediately began running into people. He snaked his way back to the corner where it all started. Everything went back to normal as soon as he turned the corner. He turned back again and this time saw his building. He made a beeline for the front door, fumbling with his keys until he finally got it unlocked. His mom and sister were home, but there was no way he was going to tell any of his family about his wild experience. He did a few years later, but as expected, everyone thought he had experienced some sort of temporary brain issue that righted itself. He wasn't one known to make up crazy stories.
I explained the basic concepts of cognition, precognition and retrocognition to Jacob. However, I was sure that none of them applied to his experience because he was able to make contact with the people he saw. I definitely felt like he experienced a full blown Time Slip. He hasn't had any others since then and doesn't want to. The other two cases might have been instances of retrocognition. For a wonderful example of an actual and proven case of Retrocognition, listen to The Adventure free audiobook.
