The Alien Encounter On Ilkley Moor

The Alien Encounter On Ilkley Moor

A UFO-Alien Close Encounter-Photographic event took place on Ilkley Moor (England) on December 1,1987. A retired police officer said that he was abducted by aliens while on a morning walk and briefly held on their craft before being returned to the moor. The man took a photograph of the moor which he said shows one of the aliens that abducted him. The incident became a huge worldwide news story. The photo has been cited as one of the strongest pieces of evidence that extraterrestrials have visited Earth. Ilkley Moor is an area of moorland between Ilkley and Keighley in West Yorkshire, England. It is well known for its carved rocks. There have been many UFO sightings on the moor.

Philip Spencer (a pseudonym) moved from London to remote West Yorkshire with his wife and child in order to be closer to his wife's family following his retirement from the police force. On the morning of December 1,1987, Spencer began walking across Ilkley Moor to visit his father-in-law in East Morton. He took a camera and compass with him in case there was fog.

Spencer was walking up a small hill when he noticed an odd-looking figure on the trail ahead of him. It was dark green, about four feet tall, had an oversized head and long, thin arms.  The creature made a gesture at Spencer which he took as a warning to stay away. He took out his camera and took a picture of it.

The creature ran away and Spencer followed it until it was lost in the fog. He then saw a craft rise from the moor and disappear into the sky. Spencer described the craft in detail saying it had an off-white color and consisted of two saucer shaped parts that were attached. One was on top of the other. There was also a noise like a loud hum. He did not take a photograph of the craft because it all happened too quickly.

Instead of continuing with his planned route, Spencer headed to another town that was about a half hour away. On arrival he discovered that it was about two hours later in the day than he expected it to be. Additionally, his compass was pointed in the opposite direction than it should have.

In the days that followed Spencer made contact with prominent UK UFO researchers Peter Hough and Jenny Randles. Hough said he was “extremely sceptical” at first, but later came to believe him. Spencer handed over the photo to Hough. When the story blew up on the news Spencer kept his anonymity. Various press investigations of the case made it clear that Spencer did not make any money from the story.

Hough examined the site and sent the photograph to a number of experts. A wildlife photographer examined the photograph and said that it was not from any known animal. Photographic experts from the Kodak laboratory in Hemel Hempstead said that they could not detect any evidence of tampering. According to ufologist Nick Redfern, Spencer was harassed by the Ministry of Defence a few days after his encounter on the moor. Redfern says that they opened a file on Spencer and sent two Men in black types to his home to intimidate him into silence.

While the photograph was being examined Spencer said that he experienced strange dreams. Following Hough's advice he participated in a session of regressive hypnotherapy. This was carried out by Jim Singleton on March 16, 1988. Under hypnosis Spencer's original account of the incident changed.  Singleton called it a “genuine recall”.

The hypnosis session revealed that as soon as Spencer saw the creature on the hill he was instantly paralysed, lifted up a few feet and pulled into the craft. Once inside, a voice told him to be calm. A group of green beings performed medical experiments on him, inserting items into his nose and mouth.

He was given a tour of the craft and shown a film-like presentation which showed  apocalyptic imagery, including nuclear explosions, famines and floods. Spencer was then shown a second presentation. He has never revealed the contents of the second, saying that the aliens who abducted him do not want humanity to know. It's almost as if he was programmed against sharing that information even if he wanted to do that.

Spencer returned to Ilkley Moor, where he then took the famous photograph. The hypnosis revealed that the alien was actually waving goodbye to him, not telling him to stay away, as in his original account.

The Ilkley Moor incident garnered worldwide media interest and remains one of the UK's most famous UFO sightings. Nick Pope, a journalist who previously worked at the ‘UFO desk’ of the Ministry of Defence included this event in a 2011 list of "Top 10 UFO incidents in the UK". It has been cited as one of the most persuasive UFO incidents to ever occur.
