HAUNTED LIVES:
ED AND LORRAINE WARREN
By Bill.Knell
Ed and Lorraine Warren were a husband and wife team of American paranormal investigators and authors whose cases and experiences formed the foundation for many popular horror movies and stories.
Founders of NESPR: In 1952, the Warrens established the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), the oldest ghost-hunting group in New England.
Noted paranormal investigators: The Warrens became known for investigating a variety of alleged hauntings, including the infamous Amityville Horror and the Enfield Poltergeist.
Inspiration for The Conjuring Universe: Their case files serve as the basis for the popular horror film franchise, The Conjuring Universe, which includes movies such as The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, and the Annabelle spin-offs.
Personal attributes: Lorraine was believed to be clairvoyant and a light trance medium, while Ed was a self-taught demonologist.
Occult Museum: They founded the Warrens' Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut, which houses artifacts from their investigations, including the Annabelle doll.
Amityville Horror: The Warrens investigated the 1975 Amityville haunting case, in which the Lutz family claimed a demonic presence terrorized their house. The story was adapted into the 1979 film.
Enfield Poltergeist: Their investigation into alleged poltergeist activity in a London home in 1977 inspired The Conjuring 2.
Annabelle Doll: The Warrens investigated the case of a Raggedy Ann doll believed to be possessed by a demonic spirit, which inspired the Annabelle film series.
The Trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson: The Warrens were involved in the defense of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claimed demonic possession as a defense during his 1981 murder trial. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It explores this case.
The Snedeker House: They investigated the Snedeker house, a former funeral home where the family living there claimed to experience unsettling paranormal activity. The story was adapted into the movie The Haunting in Connecticut.
Ed Warren died on August 23, 2006. Lorraine continued to lecture and consulted for the first two Conjuring films before her death on April 18, 2019. Their work continues to influence paranormal research and inspire horror stories and films.
Their son-in-law, Tony Spera, and daughter, Judy Spera, now manage the New England Society for Psychic Research and the Warren Occult Museum.
