Shocking Repeat UFO Sightings, A Bizarre Landing, Alien Encounters and Crop Circles
by Bill Knell
One of the most interesting UFO (UAP) sighting, alien encounter and crop circle cases brought to my attention came from Ted Benitt, a professor in the Physical Sciences Department at Nassau Community College on Long Island. In 1988 he called my UFO Sightings Hotline to report his situation after seeing my cable show UFOs OVER LONG ISLAND. I was immediately impressed with his report and credentials, so I set up a place and time to meet him.
Ted lived on an abandoned golf course that was located further east out on Long Island closer to the North Shore. That property was a good forty-five minute drive from where I lived. I drove there with a couple of people that had joined me in my efforts to investigate all the sightings and encounters that were being reported during that period of time.
Ted’s place was a bit tough to find because it was located off what looked like an unmarked road which was adjacent to a busy street. Cars whizzed by us and beeped their horns as we slowly searched for and eventually found the overgrown entrance road to what used to be a private golf club and course that had seen better days.
The golf course was already closed and had practically been abandoned for nearly eight years by the time Ted moved into a house that was located near the elusive main entrance road. It was once used as housing for the grounds-keeper. The owners of that property bought it for taxes a few years back and were trying to sell it to real estate developers. Instead, they found themselves caught up in some sort of a legal mess over zoning which was delaying the sale. That produced the need for a caretaker.
Having gone through a financially debilitating divorce a few years back and needing to move out of a rental home that was being sold, Ted found himself struggling to find affordable housing near the college where he taught. He just happened to know one of the new owners of the golf course property and when he found out that a caretaker was needed, he jumped at the chance to live there rent free. All he had to do was watch for anyone who might try to sneak in through the main entrance road, occasionally check the entire property for trespassers and watch for signs of squatters in the other buildings. Those type of situations create insurance and legal nightmares.
Ted and his girlfriend moved into the old grounds-keeper’s house in short order. She wasn’t working at that time and could watch the property during the day while he was teaching. The arrangement was perfect for everyone involved. Although they were a bit isolated, the couple felt safe in their new digs because there was a gate on the main entrance road which was locked at night and whenever no one was on the property to prevent uninvited visitors from gaining access to the old course and buildings. However, they soon found out that not all interlopers required a road.
As we pulled into the small parking lot between Ted’s house and another building which was once the main clubhouse and pro-shop for the golf course, we saw two people sitting on lawn chairs in a small garden. They approached us and turned out to be Ted and his girlfriend. Both were congenial hosts offering us some beverages and seats with them in the garden. It was a beautiful spring day and I could see why they enjoyed living out there.
Ted was a really nice guy with an impressive knowledge of all things UFO. He had a desire to know more about them that came from personal experience. Among the many school activities that Professor Benitt was involved with was as a mentor to the students which were members of the school’s Astronomy Club. The club met every couple of weeks and planned sky watching events as the weather permitted. Ted’s first UFO sighting occurred during one of these outings on a clear fall night. Ted and about twelve students from the club were sky watching in Eisenhower Park when the unexplained became a part of their lives.
The park is located in East Meadow, Nassau County, Long Island and affords amateur astronomers a reasonably un-obstructed view of the night sky. The group had various celestial targets in mind for that outing and stood around discussing them while they looked skyward with telescopes owned by the club. All of those present suddenly found themselves speechless when a disc-shaped object appeared directly over them. The disc appeared to be dark in color, silent and large enough to replace the night sky above their heads blocking out the stars. The object remained stationary for a few minutes, then it moved slowly off to the north until it was out of sight.
Ted’s natural academic and scientific skepticism kicked in after the incident as he tried to find any rational explanation he could to explain what had happened to him and the students. When conventional causes eluded him, curiosity replaced skepticism and he began looking for other answers. That led the good professor down a path which necessitated an in-depth study of the UFO phenomenon. That study produced some interesting results.
The first fact Ted uncovered was that he and the students were definitely not the only ones that had seen an object like the one which appeared over their heads. That type of sighting was common both in terms of national and local occurrences. There were many examples written about in various books and periodicals. There were also the statements made to Ted when he asked some of the people that worked in the park at night about the mysterious disc. A few of them claimed to have seen exactly the same thing on several other occasions, and at least two said that they saw the same object that Ted did on the same night. None of them ever reported what they saw for fear of ridicule.
As part of his research into the UFO phenomenon, Ted began asking the students in his classes if any of them had ever seen an Unidentified Flying Object. Much to his surprise, many had and most of those sightings occurred on Long Island. Professor J. Allen Hynek from Northwestern University was a Consultant to the U.S. Air Force investigstion into UFOs called Project Blue Book which, when it ended in 1969, stated that 95% of all sightings/encounters were explainable, 5% were not and UFOs were not a threat to national security. Hynek did not agree with their conclusions and worried about the 5%. While on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show, Johnny asked him where most of the UFO sightings in the USA occurred. He said, “Long Island, New York” without missing a beat.
Most people that have a major UFO sighting like Ted’s are repeaters. They have more than one sighting. Such was the case with him. Two nights before he called my hotline, he and his girlfriend were sitting outside in lawn chairs looking up at the stars. At around eleven, a dark circular object with bright lights on top moved over their heads to an area on the golf course near them. It made no sound at all and slowly descended until it landed. Once it landed the power went out. Ted's girlfriend ran into the house to call the authorities, but the phone made a weird buzzing sound and wouldn't produce a dial tone.
Ted said that the disc shaped craft remained there for just over fifteen minutes, as timed by his wind-up watch which worked. Then it lifted off the course slowly, moved up to about fifty or sixty feet and began moving fast towards the east. Almost immediately the power came back on and the phone worked. A call to the power company provided no explanation because no outtage had been detected. The next day the power company sent out someone to inspect the various wires and connections. Nothing out of the ordinary was found and the outtage was not repeated.
It was too dark to see much on the night of the landing, so the two witnesses decided to wait until morning to investigate the landing area. When they did they were stunned to find that the grass there had been pushed down and was swirled in one direction. The same was true of a small tree that had swirled out of the ground. But there was one more big surprise.
When the three of us joined Ted to have a look at the landing site in Ted's four wheel drive jeep, we used part of the old golf cart path (which was paved) to get there. As soon as we arrived I noticed that the circle, which measured about thirty feet in diameter, had gone over the path and continued in a perfect circle on the other side. If the circle had been caused by a natural phenomena it would not have likely crossed the path and continued in a perfect circle on the other side. Note that most UFO grass and crop circles reported in conjunction with a UFO sighting are thirty feet in diameter. These are not the same as Crop Circles with intricate designs.
As a scientist and geologist, Ted pointed out that the tree trunk and grass had been suddenly and mysteriously swirled and dried with no obvious explanation of how or why that happened. Interestingly enough, one of the people who came with me had a radiation detector. After taking readings near Ted's house, the front gate entrance and the circle, he found the the readings in the circle were significantly higher (though not dangerously) than the usual background readings.
The case grew more mysterious when Ted's girlfriend happened to mention an episode of my cable show with Alien Abduction expert and best-selling author Budd Hopkins. She noted how he felt most of these encounters began in childhood. She grew up on Long Island and since the age of seven had odd lucid dreams. Before she turned twelve she dreamed of little, friendly animals visiting her in her bedroom. They took her on adventures, but she couldn't remember what happened.
After she turned twelve the friendly animals morphed into small grey brings with big heads, large oval eyes and thin bodies. From my own investigations of Alien Abduction cases it was obvious that her situation perfectly fit the typical scenario for UFO Abductees. I asked her if she had any unexplained scars or sores on her body? She rolled up her pants to show us what looked like a scoop mark below her knee. She also occasionally had unexplained ear and tooth aches. All these were commonalities of a case of Alien Abduction.
She said that unlike the dreams with the little animals, she remembered being taken to a saucer shaped craft next to her house by the small grey creatures. Then she looked at Ted and asked, “Should I tell them?” Ted nodded and she told us the strangest part of her story. When she was sixteen she had another dream, but this one was different.
She remembered being placed on a flat surface by the beings. One of them took a small device and pushed it into her vagina. Within the next few seconds he pulled it out and they all gave her a disapproving gaze of sorts. She was left with the impression that whatever they had in mind for her would not work; that she was not what they were looking for. They returned her to her bed. When she woke up the next morning, the area of her vagina was red and sore. Even stranger, her virginity (in the form of her Hyman) was gone. Something had forced it's way into her. From that point on there were no further dreams or experiences.
