PET PEEVES THAT DRIVE ME CRAZY (and affect you)

by Bill Knell

As the author of 45+ books and hundreds of articles, it's not unusual for me to be easily annoyed at those who use writing as a cheap.”come on”. One example is something like this…

Today we lost a legend in the entertainment world. Nobody saw it coming. When the media approached loved ones they could only stare in stunned silence. It wasn't just the death, it was the manner of death. Read more using the link in the comments.

Sometimes they'll post a picture of a group of grieving people or even a well known celebrity. Once you visit the link all you'll find is an avalanche of video ads, pop-ups and some double talk. If you do get any real information it will be about someone who passed a while ago.

Even worse are seemingly interesting and original articles that promise to show you things like how to cash in on “real” side gigs. You begin to read. It appears promising, though seems to be stalling a bit, then you hit a road block. You have to have a paid subscription to read more.

Then there is the huge mudslide of articles written using AI (Artificial Intelligence). You've seen the ads… “Just enter a few words and our AI will write a polished article designed to work well with algorithms used by search engines…” and so on.

Most AI articles I've seen are bland and unoriginal. They often provide information that has been presented a thousand times before. Key words and manipulated language are used that make you think the information provided is new and make you want to keep reading. I never use AI and never have.

My university journal was always looking for original articles “with a punch”. Although I wasn't on the journal staff, mine were occasionally used. I was taking journalism and creative writing courses as electives. That opened the door. Being from New York City I tend to add that learned “City” attitude to my writing. That caught their attention.

Whether I'm writing a book or an article, I have a simple philosophy. If I'm going to write anything it's got to somehow inform, entertain and inspire. I write in a provocative way about my subjects because I'm passionate about them. If you are a Writer these are some good bits of advice.
