Funny Things in High School
FUNNY THINGS I SAW HAPPEN AT BOCA CIEGA H.S. IN GULFPORT, FL
by Bill Knell
During my time at Bogie (1971-1973) I saw some funny things happen...
- THE SNOW. I came out of the gym to go to my next class and it was snowing outside!
- THE SHARK. My science teacher was very pro-evolution. A girl in our class presented an argument for Creationism. The teacher said sharks had been on Earth longer then dinosaurs and had to have evolved to survive. It was a Friday.
When I arrived at Bogie on Monday morning, I saw students and teachers hanging around the Science classroom. Over the weekend someone opened a window and shoved a dead, four foot shark inside. By the time Monday rolled around the smell was horrific.
- THE COFFIN. We received a verbal assignment to explain how various businesses worked. During the first day it was due, me and another guy were up. He was first. His dad was a Mortician.
A couple of guys brought a coffin on rollers into the classroom. He told us all about it, then continued by placing some large photos by the chalk board.
He explained how some bodies were embalmed, others were not due to religious preference and some were cremated. The photos showed the embalming process and grossed us all out.
Then he took a small glass jar out of his pocket and offered to pass it around. It contained some ashes from a real cremation. The teacher said, "I do not think that will be necessary. Thank you." His presentation was over.
- THE MODELS. I didn't have a coffin, but I did have my sister Ingrid with me who was a model and fashion designer.
I talked about the Fashion business. Ingrid filled in the gaps, along with two other models she brought along. At that time she was the Pepsi Girl.
The guys loved our presentation.. The girls liked it too because they got a free class in how to become a model or a designer.
The coffin guy and me got the highest grades. These experiences were all just another day at Bogie; days I'll never forget.

Cerelia, a museum employee with a penchant for the obscure and a healthy dose of skepticism tempered by an insatiable curiosity, had been cleaning the newly acquired collection of ancient artifacts. She was meticulous, and painstaking in her work, a sharp contrast to the hurried pace of the city outside the museum walls. She liked the quiet solitude of the museum, a world apart from the noisy urban jungle. She found solace in the relics of the past, each object whispering a story of bygone eras.

The seeds of her self-doubt had been sown in her early years. She'd been relentlessly bullied in school for being different, for her passion for gaming, which had been dismissed as a “boy thing.” That hurt had left deep scars. Creating Lemonade had been a shield, a way to deflect the negativity she faced in the real world. It was a safe space where she could be celebrated for her skills, her wit, and her personality, instead of facing ridicule.
