American Academic Freedom Threatened: Remember Tiananmen Square ...by Bill Knell

During certain times of the year we stop and remember important events in human history. While it might be argued that events differ in importance depending on what Country you live in, some events cross the international divide and touch human hearts everywhere.

Each year Americans take time out to remember the great sacrifices made by U.S. Veterans of wars and conflicts past to help preserve our freedoms. These sacrifices take on international consequences when we remember that many in the American Military also served and died to help free nations enslaved by tyrants, dictators and despots.

One event, more then any other to date, reminds us that the service and sacrifice of those in the American Military was not in vain. That event began in April of 1989 in Communist China.

After the death of  Hu Yaobang, a prominent national politician, students and others in China joined together to protest the lack of freedoms suffered by the Chinese people at the hands of their communist leaders. Tiananmen Square became the focal point for the protests as students built a small model of the Statue of Liberty and attempted to seek America's help in obtaining that which U.S. Citizens enjoy everyday - freedom.

This event reminds us of how precious what we have is and why even the sacrifice of our own blood is a price worth paying to keep it. It also reminds us that we still live in a world filled with dictators, despots and those who would enslave their people.

On June 3, 1989, the communist government of China moved mightily against those who occupied Tiananmen Square. All along, the freedom seekers had held out some hope that the self centered, socialist, bottom feeder politicians that squat in Washington, D.C. would somehow come to their rescue. Sadly, their hope was as misplaced as the trust we currently put in the cowards of the congress to help preserve what freedoms remain in the U.S.

Needless to say, many of the freedom seekers of Tiananmen Square were massacred by their communist captors.

Despite this, ignorant American's still support the communist government in China by flocking there to see the remains of a once great civilization.

For their part, the cowards of the congress grant these murderers special trading status, probably hoping to line their pockets with a few more pieces of silver before they go on to their next financial conquest.

Our politicians sell us their trechery with the help of a media that feeds us images of a "new China", one on the brink of democratic reform. Let me show you another picture.

Mesa Community College is located in Mesa, Arizona, not far from Phoenix. It's a very modern school with a good selection of courses that attracts a wide variety of students of all ages and backgrounds. But, one group of students stands out a bit more then the rest.

Each day a special bus arrives at MCC carrying students from Communist China. As they arrive for summer classes, the students are immediately met by two well dressed chinese men who represent the communist Chinese government.

First, the students are carefully counted. Then, they are accompanied to specially arranged classes. During the classes the two well dressed men stand just outside the classroom door. Anyone who approaches is immediately questioned.

As the students leave the classoom for breaks, lunch or for the day, they are counted. Finally, they are counted for one last time and carefully loaded back on to their bus. If you want a true picture of Communist China, there it is!

After the bottom feeder politicians and cowards of the congress vote away all we hold precious, American Students may someday be allowed to attend school in some free nation, but will probably have the same restrictions placed on them.

When I see this sad display I understand how the colors of the American Flag will never run, they will simply fade from apathy.

This becomes even more obvious when I think of what happened to  Elián González when he tried to find freedom in the USA.

The boat sank during the journey, and Elián's mother, along with most of the passengers, drowned. Elián was found floating on an inner tube and rescued by two fishermen, who turned him over to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Elián was taken to a hospital and treated for dehydration and minor cuts. In addition to Elián, a young couple survived and reached shore separately.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) granted Elián temporary permission to stay in the U.S. and placed him with his great-uncle, Lázaro González, in Miami. His great-uncle wanted Elián to remain in the country, while his father, Juan Miguel González, sought his return to Cuba.

This led to a high-profile and protracted custody battle involving his father, his Miami relatives, and U.S. and Cuban officials.

Elián was returned to his father's custody after an INS raid on his Miami relatives' home on April 22, 2000. They returned to Cuba when the legal dispute concluded on June 28, 2000.
