A Powerful Sermon

A POWERFUL SERMON THAT CAUSED A GREAT REVIVAL IN AMERICA...

by Bill Knell

"Jonathan Edwards, a prominent 18th-century American Puritan theologian, is known for his powerful and influential sermons, most famously "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," which sparked the Great Awakening."

"Edwards's preaching, particularly his sermons on personal religious experience, conviction for sins, and the need for God's forgiveness, are seen as a catalyst for the Great Awakening, a period of religious revival in 18th-century America.

"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God was preached in 1741. It is perhaps his most famous sermon and explores the concept of God's wrath and the precariousness of human existence, emphasizing the need for repentance and faith in Christ." - Wikipedia

Reverend Jonathan Edwards was dismayed. Despite a large congregation, many of his parisheners were uninterested in being saved or baptized.

The Bible tells us that many are CALLED, but few are CHOSEN. In his church, like so many others of the day, many were COLD and a few were FROZEN.

After a time of much prayer and fasting, Reverend Edwards sat down and wrote his next sermon, ,"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". The message included powerful Bible teachings on God's Salvation and His Punishment for sin.

When it came time to preach, he stepped into the pulpit. Unable to see very well, Edwards picked up the papers with his sermon written on them and began to read. The papers all but covered most of his face.

Speaking in a normal voice, it didn't take long for his powerful interpretation of God's Word to take affect.

Parisheners cried, some screamed and many held on to their pews for fear that they would be almost instantly dragged into hell. The power of God was in that place. - Bill Knell
